Must-Know Knots and Hitches
You’ll come across scenarios in which many knots or hitches could work. However, in a self-rescue situation, using the right knot or hitch can often make a big difference.
The difference between a knot and a hitch is that a hitch needs something else—e.g., a carabiner or another cord—to exist. If you make both a knot and a hitch in your hand and then drop the material you made them with, the knot will still be intact while the hitch will fall apart.
