Triangulation Review
This method uses known features in the landscape to help pinpoint your location on a map. It’s especially useful in terrain without a lot of identifiable features, such as on a glacier or in the desert.
- Orient your map to the landscape.
- Shoot a bearing off of a recognizable terrain feature, such as a peak, pass, or lake.
- Carefully keeping your compass flat and the magnetic needle aligned with the orienting arrow, place the compass on the map so that the base plate is running through the center of the terrain feature you just sighted.
