GPS Vocabulary
Global Positioning System, or GPS, units use the U.S.’s system of orbiting satellites to pinpoint your location. Most communicate with at least four different satellites to essentially triangulate your position. These powerful electronics are great for storing tons of data, calculating trip statistics, sharing trip information, and complementing your map and compass skills. Just remember: GPS units (or GPS apps for phones and smartwatches) can break, get wet, or run out of batteries, so always pack a map and compass, too.
